The sand crumbled in my hand, falling quickly back in place. My skin glistened as the heat from the sun turned my pale skin a nice shade of light pink. I was told to take time off – apparently after a tragic incident, followed by other rather unfavorable events means a non-negotiable vacation.
I didn’t belong here – but then again, in most circumstances, I didn’t feel at home. Not in my mind, not on this beach and most certainly not in my own home.
The waves were a nice distraction – it was nice to hear them with my own ears. Usually, the recorded sound of waves cured my sleepless nights. The sound of silence was always…too damn loud.
I sat up from my oversized blue beach towel to see a couple walking by, hand in hand. Surely they were happy, not a care in the world, I thought. Must be nice, I muttered under my breath. I peered through my sunglasses – watching them make their way down the beach. She was slender, tall – he was about the same height. Nice watch, Ray Ban sunglasses – they definitely looked the part of this Palm Beach paradise.
Ugh, I muttered. I reached for my water bottle, that by now was warm. How can anyone relax without a drink? Can I get a waiter with a tray of mixed drinks? I won’t be picky I promise. I shut my eyes – when I opened them, there’s no waiter.
