Fight Or Die: Ch. 5

The Search for Me

Police cars swarmed my little blue house. My parents clung to each other on my small couch, My cat hovered near them. It was eerily silent – just a buzz of people going in and out.

“Ma’am, we need to ask you a few questions,” an officer said softly. My mom looked up at her from the couch. Her eyes lost and desperate. “Have a seat,” my mom said.

“When did you notice your daughter might be missing,” the officer said.

“I thought we already went over this,” she said.

“Yes ma’am, we have, but we need to walk through it again – if you’re up to it,” She said with hesitation.

My mom let out an exacerbated sigh, “sure, her neighbor called me this morning. She said that it was odd because my daughter’s car door was open and the groceries were thrown all over the driveway. My daughter is very neat and would never leave a mess like that.”

“I see,” the officer said. “And when you arrived at her home, what did you do?”

“We checked her house, and nothing looked out of place. It looked like she literally just stepped out for the grocery store with plans to return directly. I just don’t understand what someone would want with her. Why would someone take her in the middle of the day, in broad daylight?” My mom groaned. My dad grabbed her hand tighter.

“Ma’am, can you think of anyone who may have wanted to hurt your daughter? Maybe someone that she didn’t get along with?” the officer said.

“No, not at all. My daughter is very opinionated and strong willed, but she didn’t have any enemies. People genuinely like her. This feels very random, which makes it more scary. If it’s random, it’s unlikely that we will find her right?”

The officer sat quiet, allowing my mom to finish her thought. “Ma’am…”

“Call me Beth, please.” my mom said.

“Beth,” the officer said softly. “We will find your daughter. If she is as strong-willed as you say she is, she will make sure that we find her. I will be back with you. Hang in there for a few, until we have more information for you.”

My mom looked up at her, her mind jumbled and her stomach in knots, “I hope so,” she said.

The officer turned and made her way back out my front door. My mom’s phone rang, and the whole house stopped. She didn’t recognize the number, and looked at my father for direction. “Should I answer it?” she said.

“Yes, what if it’s Sarah?” he said.

The officer ran back in, directing my mom to answer her mobile, “we will track it if it’s him.” she said.

“Hello,” my mom said with exhaustion in her voice.

“Beth?” the caller said.

“Yes,” she said.

“Do you know what it’s like to be taken?” the voice said.

A screech came from my mother as my father took the phone from her.

“Don’t touch her, don’t hurt her!” He yelled.

The voice on the phone laughed, as if to mock the panic in my father’s voice.

The officer waived her hand, then frantically wrote down an address. Several officers gathered around her and proceeded to run out the door.

Another officer gently grabbed the phone from my dad who was so angry, his face was five shades of red.

The officer spoke to the man on the phone. “This is Detective Kendall speaking, tell me where you are.”

He laughed, “You think I would tell you that? That wouldn’t be any fun.”

“Well tell me why you’ve taken Sarah.” he said.

“C’Mon, you are the detective, you figure it out. It’s like a puzzle, the picture becomes very clear once all the pieces have been put together.”

The phone went dead. The detective handed my father the phone back. “The officers are on their way. Have faith.”

It wasn’t long before the officers found the cell phone tower. It wasn’t located far from my house. Just 20 minutes down the road in a rural area. But I could be within miles of that location…in any direction.
